I have a ton of math manipulatives that I use for many different units. One of my students favorite manipulatives (and mine) are tangrams. I store them in plastic baggies in a basket, so the pieces stay together, and the kids can grab one set and bring it back to their seat.
When we are in our geometry unit, I like to give students tangram challenges. Laura Candler has a wonderful Tangram Polygon Explorations that I give to my kiddos. I use it as a center to go to once they have finished their work. Their are a few different activities in her packet, so it can keep them busy for days. It is a free activity on TPT, so I'd really recommend you check it out!
What are your favorite math manipulatives and activities to do with them?

My students love tangrams, though they tend to get frustrated when I ask them to try to copy a specific picture :)

Have you ever used "Grandfather Tang's Story" with the tangrams? My kids LOVE doing this!

I haven't, thanks for the suggestion. I will have to check that book out.
DeleteLove tangrams but I never understand how pieces go missing between us putting them away one year and taking them out the next! Thanks for the link to the activity pages.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I always seem to loose a few pieces from year to year. I think my supply closet eats them.
DeleteThanks for pointing us in the direction of this great freebie! Tangrams are such fun!
